Dis-Chem Learnership Opportunities

Dis-Chem Pharmacies is offering multiple Dispensary Support Learnerships across South Africa, providing aspiring pharmacy professionals with the chance to start their careers in the pharmaceutical retail industry. These opportunities are available in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, and the Western Cape.

The programme is designed to equip learners with the knowledge and skills required to complete the Learner Basic Pharmacist Assistant Course, an essential step toward becoming a registered Pharmacist Assistant with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).

Key Responsibilities

Learners accepted into the programme will take on various responsibilities under the supervision of qualified pharmacists, including:

  • Assisting with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines and other substances.
  • Supporting the compounding and preparation of non-sterile medicines.
  • Managing stock unpacking, shelving, and cleaning in the dispensary and OTC areas.
  • Learning to accurately interpret prescriptions and prepare medications.
  • Supporting stock control, including expiry checks and reporting shortages.
  • Following up with patients on script tracking and chronic medication authorisations.
  • Assisting with call centre scripts and patient service telephone queries.
  • Promoting health awareness and patient care.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following essential requirements:

  • Matric / Senior Certificate with:
    • Pure Mathematics (minimum 50%)
    • Life Sciences or Physical Sciences (minimum 50%)
  • Completion of a proficiency test allowing registration with SAPC as a learner basic assistant.
  • South African citizenship with clear criminal and credit records.

Skills and Competencies

Dis-Chem seeks candidates who are:

  • Proficient in English and one additional South African language.
  • Able to demonstrate attention to detail, time management, and problem-solving.
  • Skilled in communication, teamwork, and customer service.
  • Computer-literate with good numerical skills.

Advantageous skills include: prior retail experience, knowledge of complementary medicines, and experience using systems such as Unisolv, SAP, or E-Scripting.

Employment Terms

  • Positions are offered on a fixed-term contract until learners qualify as basic pharmacist assistants.
  • Successful learners may be considered for permanent employment once registered with SAPC.
  • Remuneration is market-related with opportunities for growth in South Africa’s pharmaceutical retail industry.
