Role Overview: Information Specialist Intern

The role of an Information Specialist Intern is central to ensuring the smooth operation of the Information Centre at Rosebank College. Interns in this position will play a vital role in managing collections of recorded materials, supporting student research, and providing services that facilitate access to essential academic resources.

Key Responsibilities

The responsibilities for this internship are diverse and will help candidates hone their skills in several areas of library and information services. Some of the key duties include:

  1. Running the Circulation Desk:
    • Assist in the issuing, renewal, and returning of book loans.
    • Ensure that library operations are smooth and efficient, helping students with any issues they encounter during the borrowing process.
  2. Handling Newspapers and Journals:
    • Daily handling of newspapers, including scanning and clipping relevant articles.
    • Managing journals, ensuring they are accessible to students and staff.
  3. Shelving and Shelf Reading:
    • Organise books and other materials in the library by ensuring they are shelved properly and regularly checking for misplaced items.
  4. Maintaining Equipment:
    • Ensure that computers, printers, copiers, and other equipment in the Information Centre are fully functional.
  5. Supporting Research:
    • Assist students with finding resources for research projects.
    • Conduct information literacy workshops to teach students how to use academic resources effectively, including library databases and OPAC (Online Public Access Catalogue) searches.
  6. Customer Service:
    • Provide clerical support to the Information Specialist, including photocopying handouts, assisting during workshops, and checking subject guides and database worksheets.
    • Always maintain a neat, professional, and welcoming environment for students and staff.
  7. Additional Duties:
    • Prepare and mount displays for the Information Centre.
    • Help students navigate library resources and assist in using computers for academic purposes.

Qualifications and Requirements

To be eligible for the Information Specialist Intern position, candidates must meet certain qualifications and experience criteria:

  • Educational Qualification: A Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science is required for this position. This ensures that candidates have the foundational knowledge needed for the responsibilities of the role.
  • Experience: At least 1-year working experience in a relevant field, preferably in an academic Information Centre or library, is preferred. This experience will help candidates be better equipped to handle the demands of the role.
