The Phakamile Mabija Apprenticeship Programme invites motivated South African youth between 18-35 years of age, particularly from the Northern Cape Province, to apply for a unique opportunity to gain hands-on training and a nationally recognised qualification.
This initiative offers a chance to work in industries such as refrigeration, welding, fitting and turning, or boiler-making, while earning a stipend as you learn.
What’s on Offer?
Successful applicants will gain valuable on-the-job training over a period of 36 months, which includes working with experts in the field. Upon completion, participants will earn a Red Seal qualification, enhancing their career prospects in the trades industry.

Minimum Requirements for Applicants
To qualify for the Phakamile Mabija Apprenticeship Programme, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria based on the field they wish to pursue:
Boilermaking
- N2 Qualification with passed Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Drawings, and Boilermaking Trade Theory.
Fitting and Turning
- N2 Qualification with passed Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Drawings, Fitting and Turning, and Turning Trade Theory.
Welding
- Level 4 Qualification with passed Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Drawings, and Platers Trade Theory.
Refrigeration
- N2 Qualification with passed Engineering Maths, Engineering Science, Drawings, and Electrical Trade Theory.
Application Process
Interested candidates must submit their apprenticeship application form, which is available at the Department of Roads and Public Works (DRPW) District Offices. The application must be accompanied by the following supporting documents:
- CV
- Certified copies of ID and qualifications
- Proof of residence
- SARS registration number
- Proof of banking details
