  • Salary: R85,620 per annum + 37% in lieu of benefits
  • Start Date: 1 March or 1 April 2026

Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Senior Certificate
  • Basic computer literacy and attention to accuracy
  • A recommendation or nomination for ICCV from a community organisation, issued within the past six months
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a team
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Assertiveness, ability to work under pressure, public‑spiritedness, knowledge of Batho Pele principles
  • A driver’s license is an advantage (but not strictly required)
  • Preference for applicants who live in or near the community where the correctional centre is located

Additionally:

  • Applicants must use the new Z83 application form (not the older version). Incorrect versions will disqualify your application.
  • Attach only your completed Z83 and CV in PDF (saved in one file, named with surname and initials). JPEG photo attachments are not accepted.
  • If you are not a South African citizen or your qualifications are foreign, you must include evaluation from SAQA (if shortlisted)
  • Be ready to submit certified copies of your documents on or before your interview day (only shortlisted)
  • A pre-entry practical exercise, and suitability checks (criminal, credit, employment, qualification verification) will be part of the selection process

Duties / Key Responsibilities

Once appointed under these Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services Vacancies, an ICCV will be expected to:

  • Conduct regular site visits to correctional centres to monitor conditions, meet with inmates and officials
  • Receive, record, and capture complaints or requests by inmates in a case management database
  • Open and maintain case files for each complaint, follow up outstanding matters, and monitor status
  • Interview inmates and Department of Correctional Services (DCS) staff regarding complaints, grievances, or mandatory matters
  • Monitor “urgent / mandatory matters” such as deaths in custody, use of restraints, segregation, use of force or ill treatment, disciplinary matters
  • Report on irregularities or noncompliance, submit monthly reports, provide statistical analyses of complaints
  • Attend to enquiries from inmates, DCS, or public, and carry out all reasonable instructions from supervisors or regional managers

Benefits & Drawbacks

Pros:

  • You contribute to human rights, justice, and improving prison conditions
  • Gain experience in oversight, reporting, and community work
  • It’s a government contract (though fixed term) with modest salary + benefits
  • Strong chance of making a meaningful impact

Cons / challenges:

  • The salary is low compared to many professional jobs
  • The contract is temporary (36 months)
  • Work may involve emotional strain (listening to complaints, discovering harsh conditions)
  • You’ll be under scrutiny and must be diligent with reporting
  • You may travel or work in remote correctional centres, sometimes under pressure

Still, for many community-minded individuals, these Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services Vacancies offer more than a job—they offer a calling.
