About the Role:
The Advanced Researcher role is designed for passionate scientists and innovators interested in exploring Africa’s rich biodiversity to develop sustainable, bio-based cosmetic ingredients. This position aligns with L’Oréal’s “L’Oréal for the Future (L4TF)” sustainability strategy, which focuses on creating beauty products that respect both people and the planet.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct in-depth research into bio-based and biodegradable cosmetic ingredients.
  • Lead feedstock mapping projects across Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Identify and evaluate sustainable raw materials (plants, minerals, clays, etc.).
  • Collaborate with researchers, startups, and academic institutions.
  • Ensure all research adheres to Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) regulations and local legislation.
  • Support projects in biomimicry and biotechnology for next-generation cosmetic innovations.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Master’s degree or PhD in a related scientific field (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Botany, Ethnobotany, or Geochemistry)
  • Experience in biodiversity, sustainable materials, or cosmetic research
  • Familiarity with bioprospecting and ethical sourcing practices
  • Strong communication and project management skills
  • Proficiency in English (additional South African languages an advantage)
  • A passion for African haircare and skincare research

Desirable Skills:

  • Diploma in Cosmetic Formulations
  • Knowledge of African traditional cosmetic practices
  • Expertise in biodegradability and mineral characterization testing
