Job Overview

The primary role of the Fitter Shaft and Winders (C2) is to prepare, maintain, and operate production equipment, with a specific focus on mechanical and hydraulic systems.

This position plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of winders, which are vital for hauling ore, personnel, and materials within the mining shafts.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor and Control Production Processes:
    The Fitter will be responsible for overseeing the production processes in their designated area. This includes assisting with and monitoring preventative maintenance tasks and responding promptly to breakdowns that may occur during the shift.
  • Adherence to Maintenance and Production Schedules:
    The role requires strict adherence to maintenance schedules and production timelines. The Fitter must ensure that processes are optimized for efficiency, constantly identifying and addressing any constraints or issues that may affect production.
  • Conducting Maintenance and Repairs:
    A key responsibility of the Fitter is to perform maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on mechanical equipment, including winders, according to work orders and breakdown work orders. The role requires a thorough understanding of equipment functioning and the ability to work under pressure to address faults quickly.
  • Fitting Work Support:
    The Fitter will conduct fitting work that supports the maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of mechanical systems. They must ensure that all work aligns with the safety standards and operational procedures required in the mining environment.
  • Safety and Risk Management:
    The Fitter will assist in the safe operation of winders, conducting regular safety checks and ensuring that all equipment operates efficiently during each shift. Regular risk assessments will be required to ensure that the working environment remains safe and compliant with all regulations.

Desired Experience and Qualifications

To qualify for this position, the following qualifications and experience are required:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Grade 12 / N3 Certificate:
    The candidate must have completed Grade 12 or possess an N3 qualification to meet the educational requirements for the role.
  • Trade Test – Fitter Certification:
    A valid and recognized Trade Test certificate as a Fitter is mandatory. This ensures that the candidate has completed the necessary training and practical experience.
  • Winder and Ropes Training:
    The candidate must have relevant winder and ropes training, as these are essential skills for working with the winders and related machinery in a mining setting.
  • Valid Driver’s License (Code B / EB):
    A valid driver’s license (Code B / EB) is a requirement, as it may be necessary for transportation within the mine site.
  • Dover “B” Symbol:
    This certification is required for the candidate to work in the relevant capacity within the mining industry.

Experience:

  • 3 Years’ Post Apprenticeship Fitter Experience:
    The candidate must have at least three years of post-apprenticeship experience in a heavy industrial, mining, or plant environment. This experience should include specific work with winders within a mining environment, ensuring that the candidate is equipped to handle the tasks associated with this role.
