Role and Responsibilities
The Protection Officer will play a critical role in maintaining the safety and security of Seriti’s operations. Key responsibilities for this position include:
Security Personnel Management
The primary responsibility of the Protection Officer is to manage and oversee security personnel to ensure that they are deployed according to the operational requirements. This involves ensuring that all staff members are performing their duties in line with the company’s established standards and procedures. The Protection Officer will also conduct regular checks and inspections to guarantee compliance.
Incident Reporting and Investigations
As part of the role, the Protection Officer will be responsible for ensuring that any security incidents are immediately reported and appropriately investigated. This requires the individual to be proactive and take swift action when necessary to prevent further security breaches or risks.
Maintaining Security Infrastructure
The Protection Officer must ensure that all security areas are properly maintained. This includes overseeing the security control room, armed response units, drones, access and egress control services, weighbridge operations, and all security systems. Ensuring that these infrastructures are functioning at their optimum capacity is essential to the safety of the operations.
Communication and Professionalism
Effective communication within the security department is a priority. The Protection Officer will ensure that all relevant information, such as daily safety bulletins, inspection feedback, and task risk assessment controls, are shared with security staff. Maintaining a high level of professionalism within the team and fostering a positive work environment are also key components of the role.
Supervision and Parades
The Protection Officer will be responsible for supervising and leading security parades, inspecting guardhouses, and ensuring all security equipment is in working order. Any deviations or issues found during these inspections must be reported promptly for immediate corrective action.
Required Qualifications and Experience
To be eligible for this position, candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications and experience:
Educational Qualifications
- Matric/Grade 12 or equivalent (NQF Level 4)
- National Advanced Certificate or Equivalent (2 years)
Security Industry Certifications
- Registered with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSIRA) at a minimum Grade B level.
- A valid firearm competency certificate is required for the role.
Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of uninterrupted service in Protection Services or Security.
- In-depth experience as a Security Officer with a proven track record in a similar role.
- Comprehensive knowledge in the operation of CCTV and alarms, as well as security systems and processes.
- Basic knowledge of relevant legislation, including the Criminal Procedures Act, Statute Law, Security Officers Act, Law of Evidence, Mine Health and Safety Act, and Labour Law.
Additional Requirements
- Report writing skills and proficiency in computer literacy are essential.
- A valid driver’s license is required, and candidates must be able to obtain a Certificate of Fitness.
Advantageous Skills and Qualifications
While not mandatory, candidates with the following skills and qualifications will have an added advantage in the selection process:
- Studying towards a Security-related National Diploma (NQF Level 7).
- Extensive knowledge and experience in investigations within the security field.
- Team supervisory experience in the mining industry.
- Completion of a Safety course S1.
- A thorough understanding of security best practices and policies.
