Agricultural Research Council Internship Programme

The Agricultural Research Council (ARC), a prominent body in South Africa’s agricultural research field, is currently seeking a highly motivated intern for a position in Meat Science and Technology. Position Overview

As part of a Department of Agriculture (DoA) funded project, the intern will work alongside a dedicated project manager, contributing to various activities aimed at furthering scientific research in meat science. The selected intern will play a key role in compiling and executing technical activity plans, as well as participating in hands-on work that supports the successful implementation of the project.

This position is perfect for a recent graduate or a student aiming to gain practical experience in food science, research methodologies, and scientific reporting.

Key Responsibilities

The Meat Science and Technology Intern will be expected to undertake a range of activities, including but not limited to:

  • Project Contribution: Work directly with the project manager to compile and execute detailed technical activity plans for ongoing research projects.
  • Sample Collection and Preparation: The intern will assist in collecting and preparing samples required for scientific analysis. Adhering to strict quality control protocols will be essential for ensuring reliable results.
  • Data Capturing and Management: The intern will play a vital role in the capturing and organizing of research data, while ensuring compliance with data quality control standards.
  • Technical Reporting: Compiling technical reports for review and approval will be a core function. The intern will gain invaluable experience in scientific writing.
  • Scientific Technology Transfer: Participate in the transfer of scientific technology by contributing to the creation of reports, presentations, and articles.
  • Facility Maintenance: Help with the use and maintenance of scientific facilities, equipment, and apparatus.
  • Workshops and Meetings: Attend sectional meetings, workshops, and seminars to stay abreast of the latest research developments.
  • Compliance: Ensure that all activities adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards, Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and Food Safety Policies and Procedures.

The role provides a comprehensive learning experience in both practical laboratory techniques and the theoretical aspects of food science.

Requirements

To be considered for this exciting internship opportunity, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Educational Qualification: A Diploma or BSc in Food Science and Technology is required.
  • South African Citizenship: Applicants must be South African citizens to apply for the position.
  • Communication Skills: Good written and verbal communication skills are essential, as the intern will need to produce reports and participate in presentations.
  • Driver’s License: While not a mandatory requirement, possession of a valid driver’s license would be advantageous.
  • Academic Record: Candidates must attach their academic record as part of the application process.

Competitive Remuneration and Benefits
