Role and Responsibilities

As a Library Intern at Rosebank College, you will play a crucial role in supporting the library’s day-to-day operations while providing exceptional service to students. You will work closely with the Librarian and assist in various clerical and operational tasks that ensure the smooth running of the library. Here’s a breakdown of what your responsibilities will include:

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Circulation Desk Assistance: Assist with the issuing, renewal, and returning of book loans. Ensure that all transactions are completed accurately and efficiently.
  • Newspapers and Journals Handling: Daily management of newspapers, including scanning and clipping articles, as well as handling journals.
  • Shelf Reading and Maintenance: Ensure that library shelves are organised and books are placed correctly for easy access.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Check that all library equipment (computers, printers, copiers) are functional and available for use by students.
  • Notice Board Updates: Assist in updating library notice boards with relevant information.
  • Library Displays: Help in preparing and mounting engaging library displays for students.
  • Student Support: Assist students in using library computers, performing OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog) searches, and navigating library systems.
  • Clerical Support: Provide general administrative support to the Librarian, such as photocopying materials, helping during workshops, and reviewing subject guides and database worksheets.

In addition to these tasks, the intern may be required to undertake any other duties as needed.

Requirements

To qualify for this internship, candidates must meet the following educational and skill requirements:

Educational Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science (NQF Level 7).

Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge of the South African Higher Education System: Understanding the regulatory frameworks and policies governing higher education in South Africa is essential.
  • Time Management: Ability to effectively manage time and prioritise tasks in a busy environment.
  • Attention to Detail: Ensure accuracy in all tasks, from issuing books to maintaining library records.
  • Customer Service Orientation: The ability to interact with students in a professional and approachable manner, providing assistance where needed.
  • Adaptability: Comfortable working in a changing environment and able to adjust to new challenges.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively as part of a team, collaborating with other staff members to achieve common goals.
  • Strong Communication Skills: Both written and verbal communication skills must be of a high standard.
