Key Responsibilities

As an intern in the Research department, you will be required to perform various tasks that support the journalists in researching, planning, and producing stories. Your daily responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

1. Researching and Pitching Story Ideas

  • Assist journalists in researching and pitching investigative stories.
  • Conduct thorough research and compile all necessary supporting documents, including contact details.
  • Work closely with external producers, ensuring your pitch document includes relevant research and supporting materials.

2. Content Collation and Filming

  • Help journalists gather all content related to an assigned story, including setting up interviews, shooting interviews, and overseeing the filming process.
  • Work with the editor to ensure the final mix and overlay are done seamlessly.
  • Manage content logistics and ensure all documentation (such as transcriptions) is accurately compiled and handed over to the script-writing team.

3. Creative Contribution

  • Contribute creatively to weekly editorial meetings, sharing innovative ideas for stories.
  • Assist with the visual treatment of stories and help plan the creative look and feel of each story.
  • Support the studio team when required and attend legal viewings for story vetting.

4. Communication and Collaboration

  • Liaise with the Managing Editor, Executive Producer, and other stakeholders, offering regular updates on the progress of stories and any new ideas.
  • Actively participate in team discussions, offering fresh perspectives and feedback.

Requirements

This internship is ideal for individuals who meet the following criteria:

Qualifications

  • National Senior Certificate (NQF Level 4) – Essential.
  • Diploma in Journalism (NQF Level 6) – Essential.

Skills and Competencies

  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Strong attention to detail, ensuring that all tasks are completed with accuracy and care.
  • Effective communication skills, including the ability to participate in meetings and collaborate within a team.
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills to manage your time effectively and meet deadlines.
