This position, based in Kimberley, is a fixed-term 24-month contract, providing valuable experience in wildlife management, animal care, and veterinary services.

With a focus on animal health technology, this internship allows individuals to work directly with wildlife and livestock, assisting in their capture, holding, transport, and relocation.

Internship Position Overview

The Animal Health Technologist Internship Program is designed for those passionate about animal welfare, wildlife conservation, and veterinary services. This role offers practical experience in the operations of Veterinary Wildlife Services under the guidance of industry professionals. Candidates will gain hands-on experience working with animals in a challenging environment, where they will play a vital role in the health and safety of the animals within Mokala National Park.

Internship Location: Mokala National Park

Located in the Northern Cape, Mokala National Park is renowned for its rich biodiversity and conservation efforts. The park is home to various wildlife species and offers a unique setting for those interested in working within the field of wildlife management. The internship position will be based at the Veterinary Wildlife Services Kimberley Office, which provides a great opportunity to work in a dynamic and challenging environment.

Requirements for Applicants

Candidates applying for this internship must meet the following criteria:

  • Educational Qualifications: A National Diploma in Animal Health Technology is required.
  • Matric Certificate: Applicants must have passed Grade 12.
  • Experience: At least one year of experience in working with wildlife or livestock is an added advantage.
  • Knowledge of Industry Procedures: A good understanding of wildlife industry standard operating procedures is desirable.
  • Driver’s License: A valid Code B or C1 driver’s license will be beneficial.
  • Physical Health: Applicants must be in good physical health, as the role involves working in physically demanding conditions.
  • Health & Safety Understanding: Knowledge of basic health and safety principles is required.
  • No Criminal Record: A SAPS Verification will be conducted.
  • Age Range: The applicant must be between 18 and 35 years of age.
  • Internship Restrictions: Applicants must not have participated in an internship program before.

Key Responsibilities

As an Animal Health Technologist Intern, candidates will be tasked with a wide range of responsibilities, each contributing to the efficient operation of the wildlife health services at Mokala National Park:

1. Working with Animals

  • Assist in the capture, holding, transport, and relocation of animals.
  • Work in environments where there is limited control over animals, which requires quick thinking and adaptability.

2. Animal Health and Care

  • Provide support during animal treatment and research activities.
  • Tranquilize wildlife when required.
  • Collect samples from animals for health monitoring purposes.
  • Ensure husbandry duties are carried out, including feeding and cleaning of animals in bomas (temporary holding enclosures).

3. Logistical Support

  • Extensive traveling, including long-distance trips and after-hours shifts.
  • Data collection and reporting on animal health and relocation efforts.
  • Maintain capture equipment and boma facilities to ensure safe and efficient operations.

4. Administrative Tasks

  • Perform day-to-day administrative duties as required by the position.
  • Support in procurement processes linked to veterinary requirements.

5. Driving and Equipment Handling

  • Operate a small vehicle as needed for transporting animals or equipment.

Working Conditions

The internship offers a challenging but rewarding work environment with long hours, especially during peak periods. Interns will need to be flexible, as they may be required to work weekends and public holidays. The job will involve working in high-risk conditions, combining equipment, animals, and potentially lethal drugs, which requires comprehensive training and experience. The environment is physically demanding, and interns must be in excellent health to cope with the physical strain.
