The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) invites applications for a prestigious Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Renewable Energy and Community-Driven Solar Manufacturing. The Role of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (PDRF)
The appointed Post-Doctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) will focus on Resilient Renewable Energy Access through Community-Driven Holistic Development in Perovskite Solar Module Manufacturing. This exciting position offers an opportunity to contribute to a forward-thinking project that aims to transform the renewable energy landscape in South Africa and beyond.
As part of the project, the fellow will work on:
- Inclusive Co-Design and Community-Driven Innovation to ensure the development of solar manufacturing solutions that are sustainable, scalable, and locally relevant.
- Promoting Gender Inclusion and Community Participation, ensuring that the benefits of renewable energy are accessible to all, particularly marginalized groups.
- Capacity Building and Local Expertise Development to empower local communities with the skills and knowledge to participate in the renewable energy sector.
- Developing Business and Financial Modelling frameworks to support the long-term viability and growth of solar manufacturing initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
The Post-Doctoral Research Fellow will be expected to:
- Publish at least three journal articles per year in Quartile 1 or 2 journals, contributing to the body of knowledge in renewable energy, solar manufacturing, and community-driven innovation.
- Engage in high-impact international collaborations within the REACH-PSM research network, sharing insights and collaborating on cutting-edge research.
- Contribute to policy development and technology adoption strategies, helping to shape the future of renewable energy policy in South Africa and globally.
- Participate in knowledge exchange activities, including workshops, conferences, and seminars, to disseminate research findings and engage with stakeholders in the energy sector.
Eligibility Criteria
The ideal candidate for this fellowship will have a strong academic background and experience in relevant fields. Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- A PhD in a relevant STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics). Preference will be given to candidates with experience in renewable energy, solar manufacturing, or community-driven research.
- Expertise in business or financial modelling is a significant advantage, as it will contribute to the project’s sustainability and growth.
- Experience in community-informed implementation science is highly valued, particularly for those with a background in socio-technical systems.
- A proven track record of peer-reviewed journal publications, book chapters, and conference presentations in the fields of renewable energy, engineering, commercialization, marketing, and business science communication will be an asset.
- Strong analytical, writing, and communication skills are essential, as the fellow will be expected to contribute significantly to academic publications and collaborative research outputs.
- The ability to work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment is crucial for this role, as the fellow will be working with experts from around the world.
