Key Responsibilities of the School Nursing Sister

The successful candidate will be responsible for the overall health and well-being of both staff and students. Key duties include:

  • Providing First Aid to staff and learners as needed.
  • Dispensing Medication to students according to prescribed guidelines.
  • Implementing Health and Safety Protocols across the school environment.
  • Accompanying Sick/ Injured Children to medical facilities when necessary.
  • Maintaining Accurate Medical Records and submitting medical insurance claims, including handling payments to doctors and hospitals.
  • Conducting Drug Testing when required.
  • Offering Counselling to learners and staff on medical matters, promoting overall well-being.
  • Managing Stock including the ordering and invoicing of medical supplies.
  • Collaborating closely with boarding staff to ensure the smooth running of the school’s health services.
  • On-call Duty: The role involves responsibility for night shifts and being available on weekends when students are on campus.

The successful candidate may also be required to take on additional tasks as determined by the school leadership team.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate will possess a combination of medical expertise, strong organisational skills, and the ability to work collaboratively within a school environment. Specific attributes include:

  • A Christian Faith: As a school with Christian values, the candidate must be an active member of a local church and demonstrate good standing within their congregation.
  • A Nursing Qualification: Proof of registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) is a requirement for this role.
  • Experience: Previous experience in a school nursing role, particularly in a boarding school environment, will be an advantage.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential for interacting effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Dispensing and First Aid: The candidate must have dispensing skills and a valid Basic Life Support and First Aid Level 3 certification.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety: An understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act is essential to ensure the safety of all individuals on campus.
  • Administrative Abilities: Proficiency in computer skills, data reporting, and medical accounting/administration is required to manage medical records and stock effectively.
  • Organisational and Time Management Skills: The role demands attention to detail, flexibility, and the ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Driver’s License and Own Vehicle: A valid driver’s license and a vehicle are necessary, as the role may involve transportation to medical facilities.

Accommodation and Working Hours

The School Nursing Sister will be required to reside on the school campus, with designated accommodation provided. As part of the role, the candidate will need to be available for night shifts and on-call duties during weekends when students are on campus. Flexibility is a key aspect of this role to meet the needs of the school community.
