City of Johannesburg Internship Opportunities

The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) Social Development Department has announced two internship opportunities for students and graduates in 2025. These internships, focusing on Youth Coordination and the Food Value Chain, are designed to provide practical work-based experience while supporting community development across Johannesburg.

The internships are open for a period not exceeding 18 months and will be hosted at the Traduna Building. Successful candidates will receive a monthly stipend of R10 109,86 (basic salary, no benefits).

Internship Opportunities Details

  • Duration: Up to 18 months
  • Eligibility: Open to students and graduates residing in Johannesburg who have not previously participated in an internship programme.

Available Internship Positions

1. Internship: Youth Coordination

  • Branch: Targeted Beneficiaries Unit
  • Remuneration: R10 109,86 per month
  • Location: Traduna Building

Requirements:

  • Grade 12/NQF Level 4 plus a BA Degree in Development Studies or Social Sciences (NQF Level 7).
  • Applicants must be residents of the City of Johannesburg.

Primary Function:
This role focuses on implementing and facilitating Youth Development Programmes and the administration of Youth Empowerment initiatives.

Key Learning Areas include:

  • Coordinating youth development initiatives.
  • Administering Youth Development Programmes.
  • Providing administrative support to the Unit.
  • Liaising with stakeholders to ensure integrated services for youth.

Core Competencies:

  • Computer literacy (MS Word & Excel).
  • Report writing and record keeping.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Community development practices.

2. Internship: Food Value Chain

  • Branch: Food Resilience Unit
  • Remuneration: R10 109,86 per month
  • Location: Traduna Building

Requirements:

  • Grade 12/NQF Level 4 plus a degree or diploma in Agriculture or Development Studies.
  • Applicants must be residents of the City of Johannesburg.

Primary Function:
The role focuses on supporting the food value chain across agriculture, food processing, food safety, and market access. Interns will work closely with farmers, agro-processors, and stakeholders to develop sustainable practices.

Key Performance Areas include:

  • Implementing activities to increase agricultural production and market linkage.
  • Supporting smallholder farmers and agro-processors.
  • Planning and coordinating agricultural market days.
  • Assisting with compliance training in SABS standards and HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points).

Core Competencies:

  • Knowledge of food security and agricultural production.
  • Strong research and project management skills.
  • Familiarity with agricultural markets and systems.
