Job Purpose
The Electrical Assistant will perform essential semi-skilled tasks that assist electricians during installations, repairs, and maintenance of high-voltage (HV) electrical systems. This role provides an exciting opportunity for anyone looking to gain hands-on experience in the electrical field and contribute to the efficient running of Ethekwini Municipality’s HV substation operations.
Key Responsibilities
- General Electrical Support: Perform various basic tasks such as excavation, reinstatement work, and operate handheld tools and machines for different general duties.
- High-Voltage Equipment Cleaning: Under supervision, assist with hand and/or spray washing of 11 kV, 33 kV, 132 kV, and 275 kV equipment in live yards.
- Maintenance Tasks: Open tanks, clean, replace, and top-up insulating oil in electrical equipment.
- Tool and Material Management: Keep tools, specialized tools, and materials required for specific tasks organized and in good condition.
- Machinery Handling: Support in coupling, de-coupling, and stowing trailers, compressors, and other machinery.
- Heavy Lifting: Assist with the transportation and connection of gas bottles weighing up to 50 kg.

Special Conditions:
- Working Hours: 40-hour, 5-day workweek.
- Standby & Overtime: Must be available for standby and overtime as needed.
- Protective Clothing: PPE will be provided as per schedule.
- Additional Conditions: Willingness to work overtime when required.
