Purpose of the Job
Administer undertakings in line with Section 17(4)(a) of the RAF Act 56 of 1996 (as amended).

Key Performance Areas (What you’ll do)

  • Handle claims
    • Interpret settlements/undertakings and any limits to determine RAF’s future liability.
    • Scrutinise past medical costs to project future costs.
    • Correct/redraft the undertaking if settlement details changed.
    • Consider expert reports (internal/external) to confirm:
      • Link between costs and the accident.
      • Reasonableness of costs given claimant’s needs.
    • Engage experts where costs are unclear; report discrepancies to Senior Officer.
    • Pre-authorise future costs within mandate.
    • Approve/repudiate payments, request more info, or refer for medical intervention.
    • Refer matters to field Case Managers; arrange/attend home visits if needed.
    • Identify need for additional expert assessments.
    • Approve other officers’ payments on MIS (check for duplicates and correct payee).
  • Update claims records
    • Correct/update settlement details on the undertaking system to reflect accurate liability.
  • Manage correspondence
    • Draft legal letters to external stakeholders.
  • Attend to queries
    • Explain undertaking liability, how to submit a claim, and status/progress of claims; handle general enquiries; give legal advice on undertakings.
  • Manage litigation
    • Receive/record litigation processes, evaluate RAF’s legal position, hold matters over if needed, appoint attorneys, assess liability, negotiate settlements, meet time limits, prepare for trial, report risks, arrange interim disbursements, instruct on settlement/court order payments, refer bills to Legal Costs, and report attorney conduct issues.
  • Compile statistics
    • Keep daily and monthly Undertakings stats and proper records.
  • Keep claims records
    • Maintain all allocated and litigated files; diary/pend matters; record and track correspondence; manage file movements (I/S, Medical, Admin cells); keep telephone call logs and submit monthly accounts.

Minimum Requirements

  • Qualification: NQF 7 (Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma) in a relevant discipline.
  • Experience: 3 years in a claims environment.
