Aspiring pharmacists in South Africa are being called to apply for the 2026 Pharmacy Internship Programme with the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH). Pharmaceutical Services in Gauteng

Pharmaceutical services in Gauteng cover Central, Tertiary, Regional, District, and Specialised Hospitals. District pharmacies also provide support for primary healthcare.

Intern responsibilities will include:

  • In-patient pharmacy: Dispensing medication in wards, monitoring stock levels, and providing patient care advice.
  • Out-patient pharmacy: Issuing prescriptions and counselling patients.
  • Bulk compounding and repacking: Preparing medications, disinfectants, and stock mixtures.
  • Stock management: Ensuring efficient distribution and maintenance of essential medicines.
  • Patient care areas: Engaging with medical and nursing personnel about safe medication use.

Application Process

The internship programme is conducted in line with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) rules and training requirements. Successful candidates will complete a twelve-month placement at registered hospitals or district pharmacies in Gauteng.

Applicants must prepare and submit the following documents online via https://pharmacyinternships.gauteng.gov.za:

  • A detailed Curriculum Vitae (CV) highlighting qualifications, experience, and skills.
  • Certified copies of ID and matric certificate (within the past three months).
  • Academic records, including certified copies of undergraduate transcripts up to the third year of study.
  • A testimonial letter from a university lecturer.
  • A motivation letter explaining interest in public sector pharmacy.
  • Hospital preferences, with candidates required to rank three choices (Central/Tertiary, Regional, District).

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
