The Canon Collins Trust, in partnership with the Ros Moger and Terry Furlong (RMTF) Memorial Fund, is inviting applications for the 2026 RMTF Scholarship Programme. This prestigious award supports postgraduate students from across southern Africa who are committed to advancing social justice and building an open and fair society.
About the Canon Collins Trust and RMTF
Since 1981, the Canon Collins Trust has provided more than 4 000 scholarships to students from 14 southern African countries. Today, it continues to offer funding for undergraduate and postgraduate study in South Africa, the UK, Ireland, and Malawi.
The RMTF scholarship fund was established in memory of Ros Moger and Terry Furlong, two influential figures in London’s education sector. Since 2001, friends and family have raised funds annually to support talented students from the region.
Fields of Study Covered
Scholarships are available for Masters and PhD study in South Africa, within the following focus areas:
- Justice: including climate justice, law, economics, and politics
- Education: policy and practice
- Humanities: including literature, history, anthropology, and the arts
Applications linked to climate justice will be prioritised. Proposals in science or applied science are also eligible if their relevance to climate justice is demonstrated.
Scholarship Value and Duration
- Funding ranges between R20 000 and R100 000, depending on individual circumstances.
- Masters: up to 2 years of support.
- PhD: up to 3 years of support.
Renewal is subject to satisfactory academic progress. Recipients will also be expected to participate in annual conferences and smaller events throughout the year, creating opportunities for networking and collaboration.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a national of, or hold refugee status in, one of these countries: South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Swaziland, Zambia.
- Be normally resident in one of the above countries.
- Hold at least a second-class upper division degree (or equivalent), or be due to graduate in 2025.
- Be applying for postgraduate study (Masters or PhD) in the specified fields at a South African university.
- Study may be full-time, part-time, or by distance learning.
- Preference will be given to applicants completing studies in 2026 or 2027.
