About the City of Cape Town Internship Opportunities
The City of Cape Town’s internship programs are designed for graduates and students who have completed or are nearing the completion of their qualifications at a registered university or accredited higher learning institution. Interns will have the chance to work in different directorates, gaining the practical skills needed for future employment.
Programmes Available:
- Graduate Internship Programme (GIP)
Aimed at graduates with qualifications in:- Graphic Design
- Data Science
- Digital Marketing
- Computer Science/Engineering
- Sport Science
- Industrial Engineering
- A 3-year Diploma/National Diploma or equivalent from a recognized institution.
- Internships may be part-time or full-time depending on the programme.
- Candidates should not be enrolled in further studies during the internship period (except for PhD students).
- Infrastructure Skills Development Grant (ISDG)
This programme offers 3-year contracts in specialized fields such as:- Geographic Information Systems (GIS): Candidates must hold a diploma or degree in GIS, Geomatics, or related fields.
- Urban Planning: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Town and Regional Planning or Urban Planning is required.
- Interns in these programmes must register with the relevant professional bodies like the South African Geomatics Council (SAGC) or SACPLAN.
Special Conditions:
- The internships are intended to offer exposure, skills transfer, and experience to the youth of Cape Town.
- While the City provides training and development, there is no automatic guarantee of employment following the programme.
- Stipends range from R57.62 p/h to R118.05 p/h, depending on the role and available budget.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Geographical Requirements: Applicants must be residents of Cape Town and reside within the City’s jurisdiction.
- Age Limit: Candidates must be under 35 years of age.
- Qualification Requirements: Only graduates from accredited South African universities, technical institutions, or TVET colleges are eligible to apply.
- Work Requirements: No further studies (other than work-integrated learning or PhD) are allowed during the internship period.
