Both roles fall under the Sports & Recreation Unit of the Community Development Department, and candidates will be responsible for ensuring the smooth running of the facilities while maintaining high safety and cleanliness standards.

1. Cashier/Cloakroom Attendant

As a Cashier/Cloakroom Attendant, you will play a vital role in the daily operations of the City of Johannesburg’s recreational facilities. Your responsibilities will include overseeing customer transactions, managing cloakroom services, and assisting with general administrative duties.

While this position requires customer-facing duties, it offers a rewarding experience in an energetic and fast-paced environment. The minimum qualifications and key competencies required for this role are:

  • Grade 10/12 school certificate
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and handle money responsibly
  • Flexibility and reliability in scheduling
  • Knowledge of customer service practices and attention to detail

2. Seasonal Lifeguard

The Seasonal Lifeguard role is part of the Sports & Recreation Unit and is one of the key positions available within the City of Johannesburg’s efforts to provide safe and enjoyable recreational services for the public. This role is not only a great way to make a positive impact on the community but also offers valuable experience in lifesaving, safety, and customer service.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform rescues and render first aid when necessary
  • Coordinate activities and procedures related to public services and the general condition of the facility
  • Supervise the cleaning of premises and monitor the operation of filtration plants and water chemical testing
  • Ensure the safety of bathers and patrons and control their behavior
  • Assist learn-to-swim instructors with lessons
  • Comply with Swimming Pool By-Laws and Occupational Health and Safety regulations

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 10/12 school certificate
  • Lifeguard Award plus valid retest
  • General, valid First Aid certificate
  • At least 3–6 months of lifeguard experience
  • Proof of domicile within the Johannesburg Metropolitan Area
  • Physically and mentally fit
  • Willingness to undergo vetting processes

The salary for this role is R15,115.49 per month (all-inclusive, no benefits), and the position will last for a maximum of 8 months.

Core Competencies:

  • Ability to tolerate stress and handle emergency situations
  • Excellent communication skills (both written and verbal)
  • Must be able to swim and render First Aid
  • Capable of safely handling chemicals and performing maintenance tasks such as cleaning the pool
