Department of Agriculture Bursary Programme

Bursary Opportunities

The bursary covers two critical fields of study:

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Agricultural Engineering/Bio-Resource Engineering
  • Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) in Veterinary Technology

These qualifications are highly sought after, equipping students with the skills to contribute to South Africa’s agricultural and veterinary sectors.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this bursary, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  1. South African Citizenship: The applicant must be a South African citizen.
  2. Academic Background: Applicants must have completed Grade 12 or be currently studying towards a Grade 12/NCV qualification, with specific subject requirements:
    • For Agricultural Engineering or Bio-Resource Engineering: Mathematics and Physical Science.
    • For Veterinary Technology: Life Science, Physical Science, and Mathematics.
  3. Financial Need: The bursary is aimed at students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Eligible applicants must demonstrate that their combined household income is:
    • R350,000 or less for general applicants.
    • R600,000 or less for applicants with disabilities.
  4. Proof of Admission: Applicants must submit proof of admission or provisional admission to a registered Higher Education Institution for the relevant course.
  5. Geographical Preference: Preference will be given to applicants from the Eastern Cape and historically disadvantaged groups.
  6. Work Commitment: Successful applicants will be required to work for the Eastern Cape Department of Agriculture for a period equivalent to their funded study time.

Supporting Documents

Applicants must provide the following documents to complete their applications:

  • Proof of South African citizenship.
  • A recent proof of residence from a local municipality (less than 3 months old).
  • Proof of family income and an affidavit on family financial status.
  • Proof of registration or provisional registration from a Higher Education Institution.
  • Identity documents of the applicant’s parent(s) or guardian(s).
  • Evidence of any other sponsorships (if applicable).

  • The bursary will cover only registration, tuition, accommodation, meals, and prescribed textbooks.
  • Youth with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
