Diesel Mechanic Vacancy at Robben Island Museum

The Robben Island Museum (RIM) is offering a six-month contract for a qualified Diesel Mechanic in its Operations Department. This role provides a rare opportunity to work on a historic island while ensuring the safe and efficient running of RIM’s vehicle fleet, including buses, trucks, and construction machinery.

The successful candidate will play a crucial role in maintaining the transport operations that support both tourism and daily activities on the island.

Position Details

  • Job Title: Diesel Mechanic
  • Level: P10
  • Contract: Six months
  • Salary Range: R557,726.51 – R615,823.02 (Total Cost to Company)
  • Location: Robben Island Museum, Cape Town

Duties and Responsibilities

The Diesel Mechanic will be responsible for scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance and repairs. Key tasks include:

  • Servicing and repairing diesel engines used in buses, trucks, trailers, and construction machinery such as JCB and cranes.
  • Reconditioning and replacing parts, including pistons, bearings, gears, valves, and bushings.
  • Troubleshooting electrical and mechanical faults using testing equipment.
  • Disassembling and overhauling engines, pumps, transmissions, clutches, and rear ends.
  • Performing welding, cutting, arc-welding, and flame cutting as required.
  • Ensuring compliance with safety procedures and maintaining a clean, hazard-free workshop.
  • Inspecting buses daily, signing Trip Inspection forms, and completing maintenance logs.
  • Writing weekly reports and presenting them to supervisors.
  • Attending to weekend breakdowns and emergency vehicle retrievals.
  • Keeping detailed records of all jobs and maintaining workshop inventory.

Qualification and Experience Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Qualified Diesel Mechanic with a Red Seal or equivalent trade test certificate.
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in the field or a related area.
  • Valid Code EC1 or EC driver’s licence with proven workshop experience in heavy-duty vehicles (buses, trucks, JCB, cranes).
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and fix malfunctions efficiently.
  • Proficiency in breakdown recovery, welding, and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Excellent communication and report-writing abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with attention to accuracy and detail.
