About the Dispensary Support Learnerships

The learnership programme is designed for individuals who want to become qualified pharmacist assistants. Successful candidates will complete the learner basic pharmacist assistant course, which introduces the fundamental principles of pharmacy practice, dispensing, and pharmaceutical services.

Learners will be employed on a fixed-term basis as Dispensary Support staff. Once they are registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) and qualified as basic pharmacist assistants, they may be offered permanent employment within Dis-Chem Pharmacies.

Key Responsibilities

Participants in the Dispensary Support Learnerships 2025 / 2026 will perform several duties under the supervision of qualified pharmacists. Responsibilities include:

  • Assisting with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances.
  • Compounding, preparing, or manipulating non-sterile medicines according to approved Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Unpacking, merchandising, and cleaning dispensary shelves and over-the-counter (OTC) areas.
  • Learning to interpret prescriptions accurately while complying with SAPC regulations.
  • Picking, packing, labelling, and checking medications for accuracy.
  • Supporting stock control by monitoring expiry dates, organisation, and cleanliness of medicine storage.
  • Following up with patients regarding repeat scripts and appointments.
  • Handling call centre scripts and patient service calls.
  • Assisting with medical scheme authorisations for chronic, oncology, and HIV treatments.
  • Reporting stock errors and shortages to the Dispensary Manager.
  • Receiving and recording dispensary stock according to company procedures.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the Dispensary Support Learnerships, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with Pure Mathematics and either Physical Science or Life Science.
  • Minimum average of 50%.
  • Ability to communicate in English and a second language (read, write, and speak).
