Purpose of the Driver/Messenger Role

The Driver/Messenger plays an essential role in transporting people, documents, and goods safely to various locations. Candidates will ensure compliance with safety regulations, follow set delivery schedules, and handle administrative duties related to deliveries. This role requires attention to detail, punctuality, and strong organizational skills.

Key Responsibilities

1. Messenger Services

  • Collect and verify correspondence from government institutions.
  • Deliver packages, goods, and messages safely and on time.
  • Obtain signatures or receipts for delivered items.
  • Maintain records of daily trips in the logbook.
  • Plan efficient routes to ensure maximum delivery efficiency.
  • Reconcile packages at recipient locations and confirm deliveries with the office.

2. Administration

  • Sort and archive scanned files following RAF’s Records Management policies.
  • Ensure timely and accurate document deliveries to financial institutions, government departments, and clients.
  • Monitor postal service operations within the branch.
  • Prepare and manage records for off-site storage.

3. Transportation and Operations

  • Load and unload goods, documents, or materials securely.
  • Transport staff and products to required locations safely.
  • Identify and report mechanical faults or delays immediately.

4. Vehicle, Machinery & Equipment Maintenance

  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip inspections on vehicles.
  • Report defects, accidents, and traffic violations.
  • Ensure company vehicles are kept clean and in good working condition.

5. Reporting and Document Processing

  • Manage incoming and outgoing mail, including sorting and batching.
  • Record registered mail and ensure proper postage processes are followed.
  • Report all issues related to vehicle maintenance, machinery, or other operational delays.

Minimum Requirements

  1. Education:
    • Matric or Grade 12 certificate.
  2. Licenses:
    • Valid Code 10 (EC1/EC) driver’s license.
    • Valid Professional Driver’s Permit (PDP).
  3. Experience:
    • At least 1 year of experience in driving and messenger services.

Technical and Behavioural Skills

  • Technical Skills:
    • Ability to assess vehicle safety and roadworthiness.
    • Knowledge of transporting people and goods.
    • Familiarity with record-keeping and route planning.
  • Behavioural Competencies:
    • Strong organizational and planning abilities.
    • Attention to detail.
    • Client service orientation.
    • Good communication skills.
    • Ethical and professional behavior.
