Graduate Trainee Programme

The FAIS Ombud is inviting recent graduates to apply for the Graduate Trainee, designed to cultivate a pipeline of skilled professionals for the financial services sector. This 12-month structured programme offers an invaluable opportunity to gain hands-on experience while working under the guidance of dedicated mentors in the Case Management/Adjudication Department.

Programme Overview

This graduate trainee role offers an immersive learning experience in a fast-paced, target-driven environment. Graduates will work closely with experienced professionals, including lawyers, financial planners, investigators, and negotiators, gaining insight into dispute resolution, stakeholder engagement, and case management.

The programme will equip candidates with the necessary skills and exposure to address complaints from the public against financial service providers, facilitating resolutions in a fair, informal, and efficient manner. Graduates will be trained in competency-based modules, providing a well-rounded experience in adjudication.

Key Performance Areas

Graduates selected for this role will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Dispute Resolution: Facilitate fair negotiations and settlements when appropriate.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Maintain respectful and professional interactions with all involved parties.
  • Case Evaluation: Analyse evidence and arguments thoroughly and objectively.
  • Timeliness & Efficiency: Adjudicate cases promptly and manage workloads effectively.
  • Confidentiality: Ensure the security and confidentiality of case information.
  • Fairness & Impartiality: Uphold unbiased, ethical, and conflict-free decision-making.
  • Communication: Clearly articulate rulings and explain legal concepts to involved parties.

Requirements

The FAIS Ombud is seeking candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • South African citizen with a valid South African Identity document.
  • An LLB degree is required.
  • Practical Legal Training (PLT) will be an advantage.
  • A passion for public service, with a desire to work in the financial sector.
  • Strong academic background.
  • Ability to thrive in a high-pressure environment, willingness to learn, and adaptability to work extra hours.
  • Energetic, self-driven, and deadline-oriented.
  • Proficiency in computer literacy.
