The Institute of Municipal Engineering of Southern Africa (IMESA) offers a valuable opportunity for students pursuing studies in Civil Engineering and related infrastructure engineering disciplines. IMESA Bursary Programme – Fields Covered
IMESA is offering two types of bursaries for the 2026 academic year:
- Bursary Scheme A: Available to non-IMESA members pursuing a Civil Engineering qualification (or a related infrastructure engineering discipline as approved by IMESA).
- Bursary Scheme B: Exclusively for children of IMESA members who have held membership for at least five years, pursuing a Civil Engineering qualification or related field.
Bursary Coverage and Payment Terms
The IMESA bursary will cover tuition fees and required textbooks, up to a maximum of R50,000. Payment will be made directly to the student’s tertiary institution upon submission of the necessary documentation.
Bursary recipients will be assigned a mentor and are encouraged to participate in IMESA’s activities to develop practical skills and engage with the engineering community.
Eligibility Criteria for IMESA Bursaries
Applicants must meet the following criteria for their application to be considered:
Bursary Scheme A: Non-IMESA Members
- Full-time study towards a Civil Engineering qualification (or approved infrastructure engineering discipline).
- Completion of the first year of study.
- Enrolling for the second year (or later) in 2026.
- Enrolled at an ECSA accredited institution in South Africa.
- Financial need: The applicant must demonstrate that they are unable to afford their studies without this bursary.
Bursary Scheme B: Dependents of IMESA Members
- Full-time study towards a Civil Engineering qualification (or approved infrastructure engineering discipline).
- Completion of the first year of study.
- Enrolling for the second year (or later) in 2026.
- Enrolled at an ECSA accredited institution in South Africa.
- Dependent status: The applicant must be a child of an IMESA member who has held membership for at least five years.
How to Apply for the IMESA Bursary
Interested students must download and complete the relevant IMESA bursary application form for their specific scheme:
- Bursary Scheme A: Application Form for Non-Members
- Bursary Scheme B: Application Form for Dependents of Members
Applicants must submit the following documentation with their application:
- Certified copy of ID document.
- Certified copy of 2025 mid-year exam results.
- Statement from the tertiary institution confirming academic progress.
- Affidavit confirming parental/guardian income and financial need.

Important Notes
- Bursary recipients are expected to pursue a career in Local Government if possible, although employment with IMESA is not guaranteed.
