Library Assistant Position Summary

As Library Assistant, you will support the Head Librarian and library team in daily operations, user services, collection maintenance, and promoting reading and information literacy among learners and staff. You will also contribute to the school’s Catholic ethos and occasionally assist in whole‑school events beyond library functions.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Below is a summary of the primary tasks expected of the successful candidate:

  • Assist in running the circulation desk: issuing, renewing, returning of books
  • Sort and re‑shelve returned books, periodicals, journals, and other materials
  • Assist in preparing and mounting library displays, programmes or events
  • Assist with indexing and cataloguing of books and library materials
  • Help patrons (learners, teachers, staff) with ready‑reference questions, bibliographic instruction, database searches
  • Daily handling of journals, magazines, shelf reading, ensuring order and tidiness
  • Operate and maintain knowledge of library databases, online tools, cataloguing systems
  • Enforce library rules and discipline, maintaining a quiet and respectful environment
  • Be willing to work shifts on a rotational basis (to cover morning, afternoon, possibly evening)
  • Be available to participate in whole‑school events, even outside the library domain
  • Encourage and help foster a reading culture across the school
  • Support the Catholic ethos of St Benedict’s in your work and presence

Advantageous:

  • Knowledge or experience in archival practices or special collections
  • Experience in academic libraries, especially school or tertiary
  • Familiarity with library classification systems, digital catalogues, indexing

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

To be considered for this post, you should have:

  1. A Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Studies (LIS)
  2. At least three years’ experience working in an academic library
  3. Good command of English, written and spoken
  4. Proven ability to assist users, manage circulation, indexing, shelving
  5. Experience in using library databases, cataloguing tools, online resources
  6. Willingness to work shifts, rotate tasks, and take part in broader school life
  7. A willingness to support and participate in the Catholic ethos of the school
