Key Responsibilities

As a Media & Communications Intern, you will have the opportunity to contribute to a wide range of activities that support MSF’s media and communications efforts. Here’s a glimpse of what your responsibilities will entail:

  • Monitor and Share MSF’s Impact:
    • Use tools like Newsclip and Google Alerts to track media coverage (including print, online, and broadcast).
    • Prepare engaging reports like “MSF in the Media,” “Daily Digest,” and “Operational Updates” to inform internal teams about MSF’s coverage and impact.
  • Build Media Connections:
    • Research and update journalist contact details on platforms such as Prezly, and support media events to strengthen MSF’s relationship with the media.
    • Map out media beats and assist with building relationships with key media outlets.
  • Craft Compelling Stories:
    • Develop and pitch stories to media outlets to raise awareness of MSF’s work.
    • Curate content for medical journals and work on editorials and visuals that inspire action and engage audiences.
  • Support Medical Outreach:
    • Assist in managing content schedules, coordinate with designers, and liaise with medical journal account managers to promote MSF’s mission to healthcare professionals.
  • Stay Organized:
    • Maintain comprehensive archives, track payments, and ensure compliance with MSF’s knowledge management and GDPR guidelines.
  • Innovate and Collaborate:
    • Participate in brainstorming sessions to generate fresh content ideas, collaborate with the Communications team, and contribute to driving engagement across MSF’s platforms.

Requirements

MSF is looking for a proactive and creative individual who is passionate about media and communications, and eager to make a difference in the humanitarian sector. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications and skills:

Qualifications & Skills

  • A recently attained degree or National Diploma in Communications, Media, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with the South African media landscape, including community media.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; knowledge of online media databases is an advantage.
  • Strong research, analytical, and time-management skills.
  • An interest in local and international current affairs, as well as humanitarian issues.
  • No prior experience is required – we value a curious mind and a willingness to learn.
