The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) Bursary Scheme is a beacon of hope for many aspiring students seeking a future in the mining and minerals sector. Established with the goal of increasing the number of qualified professionals in this vital industry, the MQA Bursary Scheme has been an instrumental resource for students who aim to make a difference in the sector.
Every year, the scheme opens its doors to provide financial support to learners who want to pursue higher education in mining-related fields.
What Does the MQA Bursary Cover?
The MQA Bursary Scheme offers comprehensive support, including:
- Full tuition and registration fees.
- Residence fees or a private accommodation allowance.
- Books and meals for the bursars.
- A semester allowance, where applicable.
These generous contributions ensure that students can focus on their studies without the financial burdens that often prevent them from pursuing higher education.
Who Can Apply?
The bursary is open to South African citizens who meet certain academic and financial criteria. Whether you are a high school learner about to graduate or a student already enrolled at a university or TVET college, you are eligible to apply if you meet the requirements.
Two Categories of Applicants
1. Unemployed Learners
The first group that is invited to apply consists of unemployed learners. This includes those who are currently in Grade 12 or students already studying at public universities, universities of technology, or TVET colleges. These bursaries are designed to help them further their education and develop skills that are in high demand within the mining industry.
In total, 430 bursary opportunities will be available for the 2026 academic year for unemployed learners. Successful applicants will have their tuition fees, accommodation, books, and meals covered, allowing them to focus entirely on their studies.

It is important to note that those already enrolled in an MQA-funded internship or work experience program are not eligible to apply, as this could be considered “double dipping.”
