The Role of Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant

The Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant will be an integral part of the healthcare team at Tokai Estate. This role involves the responsibility of medication control and managing patients’ prescriptions in Faircape’s healthcare facilities, all under the supervision of the Responsible Pharmacist. The ideal candidate will be someone who thrives in a fast-paced, sub-acute healthcare environment and is eager to make a meaningful contribution to patient care.

Key Responsibilities

The Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant will have the following core duties:

  1. Prescription Preparation & Dispensing
    • Interpreting and preparing prescriptions.
    • Repackaging and distributing medications.
    • Ordering medicine and scheduled substances based on instructions from the Responsible Pharmacist.
    • Preparing, labeling, and dispensing medication in compliance with pharmacist-reviewed prescriptions.
  2. Stock Control
    • Managing and monitoring ward stock and emergency trolley supplies.
    • Replenishing stock in emergency trolleys and cupboards as needed.
    • Conducting weekly and monthly stock takes, reconciling actual versus system stock, and reporting discrepancies to the Responsible Pharmacist.
  3. Billing & Administration
    • Processing medication and consumables billing for sub-acute patients via Clinic Manager.
    • Submitting medical aid claims through Propharm.
    • Ensuring daily billing reports are reviewed and signed off by the Responsible Pharmacist.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification.
  • Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).
  • Previous hospital experience will be advantageous.
  • Experience with blister packaging, Propharm, and Clinic Manager will be considered beneficial.
