Sol Plaatje University (SPU), a distinguished institution in Kimberley, is seeking a qualified and experienced Plumber to join its Facilities and Services Department. This permanent position offers the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment dedicated to maintaining and improving the university’s infrastructure.
Plumber Position Overview
The role involves maintaining and repairing plumbing systems across the university’s buildings, including both planned installations and scheduled maintenance. The successful candidate will ensure plumbing systems are functioning efficiently, respond to breakdown call-outs, and perform regular inspections and installations.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance and Repairs
- Service and replace geysers, flush-masters, tap washers, and toilet systems.
- Locate and repair burst pipes, ensuring that all systems are working correctly.
- Inspect plumbing systems, plan, and order necessary materials for repairs.
- Test and verify newly installed plumbing systems.
Planned Installations
- Install new main water lines, freshwater pipes, and sewer systems.
- Set up plumbing systems in new buildings and for infrastructure expansions.
- Install geysers and irrigation water lines.
Scheduled Maintenance
- Inspect main water supply lines, valves, and reservoirs to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Regularly check fire hydrants and connections to ensure functionality.
- Ensure that reservoir tanks are full, sealed, and meet safety requirements.
Breakdown Call-Outs
- Respond promptly to emergency call-outs, including after hours and weekends.
- Be available for standby duty and ensure swift response to plumbing emergencies.
- Conduct temporary emergency repairs followed by permanent fixes that meet SPU’s standards.
Administration and Reporting
- Collect job cards from the Foreman, clarifying the requirements for each job.
- Record the materials used and ensure departmental sign-off before submitting reports.
- Maintain detailed records of job statuses and plumbing systems serviced.
Equipment and Machinery Maintenance
- Ensure that all tools and machinery are properly maintained and secure.
- Keep equipment functional and service it regularly.
- Provide performance reports on equipment maintenance.
Safety, Health, and Environmental (SHE) Compliance
- Identify unsafe conditions and report them for corrective action.
- Ensure compliance with all SHE procedures, including the use of PPE and safety signage.
- Submit regular safety reports and implement any necessary corrective actions.
Minimum Requirements
- A recognised Plumbing Certificate (Qualified Artisan).
- At least 1 year of experience as a plumber in the built environment.
- Ability to carry out plumbing maintenance and installations effectively.
Desirable Experience
- Minimum 3 years of experience as a plumber in a similar environment.
- Previous experience in a higher education setting would be advantageous.
