The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health is seeking dedicated and experienced nursing professionals to fill 15 vacancies for Professional Nurses specialising in Operating Theatre Nursing. These posts offer an opportunity to provide essential, specialised care in some of the province’s leading hospitals.

Position Overview

The role of a Professional Nurse: Operating Theatre is critical in ensuring safe, ethical, and high-quality surgical care. Nurses in this specialty will deliver holistic patient-centred services in compliance with professional standards, healthcare policies, and ethical frameworks.

Successful candidates will play a vital role in maintaining a therapeutic environment for patients, supporting multidisciplinary teams, and upholding the Department’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery across KwaZulu-Natal.

Salary Package and Benefits

  • Grade 1: R476,367 per annum
  • Grade 2: R583,989 per annum
  • Additional Benefits: 13th cheque, optional medical aid, and housing allowance (subject to meeting prescribed requirements)

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Grade 12/Matric/Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification
  • Degree/Diploma in General Nursing
  • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse and Operating Theatre Nurse
  • One (1) year post-basic qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing Science accredited by SANC
  • Grade 1: Minimum of 4 years’ experience in nursing after registration with SANC in General Nursing
  • Grade 2: Minimum of 14 years’ experience, with at least 10 years in the specialised field post-basic qualification

Recommendation: A Diploma in Basic Midwifery is advantageous.

  • Strong knowledge of nursing legislation, ethical practices, and healthcare policies
  • Leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Effective communication and interpersonal abilities
  • Flexibility to rotate between disciplines, including night duty and weekends
  • Commitment to teamwork, professionalism, and patient-centred care

Key Responsibilities

The appointed Professional Nurses will be responsible for:

  • Delivering specialised nursing care aligned with clinical and ethical standards
  • Ensuring effective infection prevention and compliance with occupational health and safety protocols
  • Supporting training and research initiatives to strengthen evidence-based practices
  • Managing resources efficiently to ensure cost-effective service delivery
  • Upholding accreditation standards and compliance with the Ideal Hospital Framework and Office of Health Standards Compliance assessments
