The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health is seeking dedicated and experienced nursing professionals to fill 15 vacancies for Professional Nurses specialising in Operating Theatre Nursing. Position Overview
The role of a Professional Nurse: Operating Theatre is critical in ensuring safe, ethical, and high-quality surgical care. Nurses in this specialty will deliver holistic patient-centred services in compliance with professional standards, healthcare policies, and ethical frameworks.
Successful candidates will play a vital role in maintaining a therapeutic environment for patients, supporting multidisciplinary teams, and upholding the Department’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery across KwaZulu-Natal.

Salary Package and Benefits
- Grade 1: R476,367 per annum
- Grade 2: R583,989 per annum
- Additional Benefits: 13th cheque, optional medical aid, and housing allowance (subject to meeting prescribed requirements)
Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Grade 12/Matric/Senior Certificate or equivalent qualification
- Degree/Diploma in General Nursing
- Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse and Operating Theatre Nurse
- One (1) year post-basic qualification in Operating Theatre Nursing Science accredited by SANC
- Grade 1: Minimum of 4 years’ experience in nursing after registration with SANC in General Nursing
- Grade 2: Minimum of 14 years’ experience, with at least 10 years in the specialised field post-basic qualification
Recommendation: A Diploma in Basic Midwifery is advantageous.

Key Responsibilities
The appointed Professional Nurses will be responsible for:

- Ensuring effective infection prevention and compliance with occupational health and safety protocols
- Supporting training and research initiatives to strengthen evidence-based practices
- Managing resources efficiently to ensure cost-effective service delivery
- Upholding accreditation standards and compliance with the Ideal Hospital Framework and Office of Health Standards Compliance assessments
