The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport has officially opened 200 Provincial Inspector Trainee Positions in KZN, offering young and determined South Africans an opportunity to build a career in law enforcement, road safety, and traffic management. Training and Placement
Training will take place at the Traffic Training College in Pietermaritzburg.
- The training period lasts two years.
- Trainees must successfully complete the Traffic Officer’s Diploma Course.
- After graduation, candidates will be placed at various RTI stations across KwaZulu-Natal to serve as Provincial Inspectors.
- Those who do not successfully complete the course within the prescribed period will have their employment terminated.
Requirements
To qualify for one of the 200 Provincial Inspector Trainee Positions in KZN, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Educational Qualification
- A Senior Certificate (Matric) or an equivalent qualification (NQF Level 4).
- Driver’s License
- A valid Code B manual driver’s license is compulsory.
- Criminal Record
- Candidates must have no criminal record. A SAPS clearance certificate will be conducted before appointment.
- Medical Fitness
- A medical certificate from a doctor or clinic is required (not older than three months) proving the applicant is physically fit.
- Candidates must be able to perform strenuous exercise.
- Applicants will undergo a full medical examination at state expense before confirmation of appointment.
- Age Requirement
- Applicants must not be older than 35 years of age on the first day of enrolment at the Traffic Training College.

- Applicants must be South African citizens or permanent residents.

Duties and Responsibilities
Once trained and appointed, Provincial Inspectors are responsible for enforcing road traffic, passenger, and transport legislation. Key duties include:
- Road Safety Enforcement
- Ensure the free flow of traffic.
- Conduct roadblocks, speed checks, and special law enforcement operations.
- Patrol hazardous road locations and warn motorists.
- Traffic Control
- Manage traffic at accident scenes.
- Direct traffic during congestion and emergencies.
- Assist motorists with breakdowns or road safety issues.
- Vehicle Testing and Compliance
- Conduct roadworthy tests.
- Monitor compliance at Driver Licence Testing Centres (DLTC) and Vehicle Testing Stations (VTS).
- Crime Prevention
- Detect and prevent illegal activities (e.g., unroadworthy vehicles, unlicensed drivers).
- Enforce compliance with firearms and ammunition regulations.
- Administration and Reporting
- Issue notices, execute arrests, and prepare court documents.
- Write detailed reports on enforcement activities.
- Community and Professional Engagement
- Educate the public on road safety.
- Participate in human resource development programs.
- Promote corporate image of the Directorate: Traffic Law Enforcement.
Salary
Successful candidates appointed as Trainee Provincial Inspectors will earn a commencing salary of R193,359 per annum (Salary Level 04).
This salary is applicable during the two-year training period at the Traffic Training College in Pietermaritzburg. After completing training and obtaining the Traffic Officer’s Diploma, candidates may be placed permanently at any of the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) stations across KwaZulu-Natal. Upon permanent placement, salaries and benefits will improve significantly.
