Redefine Properties Limited is offering an exciting opportunity for a Sustainability Internship based in Johannesburg, Gauteng. This internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in integrating Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles within property investments, asset management, and reporting frameworks, contributing to sustainability in the real estate sector.

Key Role Overview

As a Sustainability Intern, you will play a vital role in supporting the company’s sustainability goals. The role involves administrative and research responsibilities, focusing on ESG strategy implementation, data management, sustainability project coordination, and Green Building certification processes.

This internship offers a unique opportunity to work closely with the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) and gain exposure to various ESG initiatives within Redefine’s portfolio.

Key Responsibilities

  • Data Collection and Management
    • Assist with gathering and consolidating ESG-related data from internal and external stakeholders.
    • Ensure the integrity of ESG data on reporting platforms through thorough validation processes.
  • Research and Benchmarking
    • Conduct research on the latest ESG trends, regulatory updates, and industry benchmarks.
    • Support documentation for Green Building recertification, contributing to sustainability improvements and performance enhancements across the property portfolio.
  • Reporting Support
    • Help in the preparation of ESG-related reports, supporting the ESG disclosure framework.
    • Provide assistance in compiling information for regular sustainability reporting requirements.
  • Project Support
    • Assist in coordinating ESG projects such as energy efficiency initiatives, water management, waste reduction, and social investment projects.
    • Manage project timelines, ensuring all deliverables are met and deadlines are adhered to.
  • General Administrative Support
    • Organise and maintain ESG documentation across the company’s platforms.
    • Assist in scheduling meetings, preparing minutes, and managing action trackers.
    • Support the accounts department with payment processing related to ESG projects.
  • Stakeholder Engagement
    • Contribute to communication plans for promoting ESG awareness across stakeholder groups.
    • Liaise with internal teams to monitor ESG project updates and share progress.

Experience and Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have a relevant tertiary qualification in the building or environmental sector. A professional accreditation is highly desirable, alongside some prior experience in ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) roles. While ESG experience is an advantage, it is not mandatory.

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.
  • Proficiency in data management and data analysis.
  • Exceptional research abilities and attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Solid report writing skills, with the ability to meet deadlines consistently.

Knowledge

  • Basic understanding of ESG concepts, particularly in the real estate sector.
  • Familiarity with sustainability reporting frameworks such as CSRD, ISSB, GRESB, and GRI.
  • An interest in climate change, social impact, and governance as they relate to Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs).

Learning and Development Opportunities

  • Practical exposure to ESG data management and reporting within the real estate industry.
  • Insight into the integration of ESG factors in property investment and asset management.
  • Experience working on sustainability projects and Green Building certifications.
