Weather Observations Learnership

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has opened applications for its Weather Observations Learnership 2026, offering candidates a unique opportunity to receive specialised training in weather observation. The 12-month programme will be hosted at the SAWS Regional Training Centre in Pretoria.

About the Learnership

Successful candidates will undergo 12 months of full-time weather observation training, focusing on all aspects of meteorological data collection and reporting. Upon completion, learners may be appointed to SAWS regional offices where shift work is required.

As part of the programme, learners are expected to obtain a valid driver’s licence during the training year, at their own cost. Strong interpersonal skills, computer literacy, and a willingness to work in a team environment will be seen as additional advantages.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must hold a Grade 12 (Matric) certificate with the following results:

  • At least 50% (D symbol or higher) in Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy)
  • At least 50% in Physical Science
  • At least 50% in English
