Key Responsibilities

1. Develop and Implement Employee-Focused Communication Strategy

The Practitioner Communication will be tasked with creating and delivering communication plans that are tailored to meet the specific needs of Sasol Mining teams. The focus will be on clear, timely messaging that aligns with safety protocols, operational updates, and Sasol’s broader strategic objectives. Tools such as shift briefings, noticeboards, SMS alerts, and digital screens will be leveraged for maximum impact.

2. Engagement and Culture Building

This role will facilitate two-way communication by developing feedback mechanisms like pulse surveys and feedback boxes. The Practitioner will partner with shift supervisors and union representatives to co-create content that resonates with frontline workers, including success stories, team spotlights, and recognition initiatives to enhance team cohesion.

3. Content Creation and Dissemination

The position will require the creation of operation-specific content, including videos, newsletters, and infographics, catered to different literacy levels and shifts. The Practitioner will be responsible for managing real-time communication during critical incidents, such as safety alerts and shutdowns, ensuring clear and calm messaging to all staff.

4. Event and Campaign Execution

Sasol emphasizes employee engagement through on-site activities like Safety Days and family visits. The Practitioner Communication will lead the planning and execution of these events, as well as recognition programs such as the “Super League Awards,” celebrating excellence in the workforce.

5. Compliance and Brand Alignment

Ensuring all communication materials adhere to Sasol’s branding guidelines and industry regulations, including the Mining Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and Social and Labour Plans (SLPs), is a critical part of this role. The Practitioner will monitor communication effectiveness using metrics such as participation rates and safety compliance improvements.

Key Requirements

Formal Education

  • Diploma or Degree in Communication, Journalism, or a related field (NQF 6/7)
  • Certification in Employee Engagement or Events Management is advantageous

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience in a communication or employee engagement role

Skills and Competencies

  • Proficiency in digital communication tools (e.g., Canva, SharePoint)
  • Experience in crisis communication and managing sensitive incidents
  • Strong verbal communication and information management skills
  • Knowledge of mining operations and safety standards is a plus
  • Fluency in local languages (e.g., isiZulu, Sesotho) is highly desirable
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse teams and stakeholders
