New First-Year Students: How Wits University Registration Works for You

If you are entering Wits University for the first time in 2026, Wits University Registration is a structured process that must be completed in a specific order. You cannot register unless each step is done correctly, so it’s important that you understand what is required and when to act.

Below is a step-by-step explanation of what you need to do once you receive an offer from Wits.

Step 1: Accept Your Firm Offer on the Self-Service Portal

You can only begin Wits University Registration after you receive a firm offer from the university. This offer will be sent to you via SMS and email.

Once you receive it, you must log into the Wits Student Self-Service Portal and formally accept the offer. If you do not accept the offer by the deadline stated in your offer letter, the place may be given to another applicant.

If you are waitlisted or deferred, you will need to check the self-service portal regularly, as offers are made continuously depending on space availability.

Step 2: Complete the Student Contract

After accepting your offer, you are required to complete a student contract. This is a mandatory agreement between you and the university that outlines:

  • Your responsibilities as a student
  • Wits’ academic and financial rules
  • Conditions linked to your registration

Your registration will not proceed unless the student contract is completed in full, so make sure you read and submit it carefully before moving on to the next step.

Step 3: Pay the First Fee Payment or Apply for a Postponement

Before you can register, you must deal with the first fee payment requirement.

  • If you are self-funded, you are required to make the first fee payment before registration.
  • If you are awaiting NSFAS feedback, Wits allows you to apply for a first fee payment postponement.
  • If you are an international student, you are required to pay 75% of your tuition fees and obtain clearance from the International Students Office and the Fees Office before registering.

You will not be blocked permanently if you are waiting for NSFAS, but you must follow the official postponement process to avoid delays.

Step 4: Register Online Before Your Deadline

Once your offer is accepted, your student contract is completed, and your fees or funding are cleared, you can proceed with online Wits University Registration.

Registration is completed via the self-service portal and must be done before the deadline specified in your firm offer letter. Missing this deadline may result in the cancellation of your offer.

You do not need to come to campus to register unless you experience difficulties or are instructed to attend assisted registration.

Step 5: Activate Your Wits Student Email and Online Services

After registering, you must activate your Wits student email account. This email address is essential, as all official communication from the university will be sent there.

Activating your student email also gives you access to:

  • Ulwazi (Wits’ learning management system)
  • Academic timetables and course material
  • Student support platforms and announcements

Failing to activate your student email can result in you missing important academic and administrative information.

Gateway to Success Programme (Orientation)

As a new first-year student, you will automatically be included in the Gateway to Success Programme, which runs from:

20 January to 02 February 2026

This programme is designed to help you transition into university life and covers:

  • Academic expectations at Wits
  • Time management and study skills
  • Navigating campus systems and support services
  • Understanding student life, wellness, and academic support

While some activities may be online, others may take place on campus. Participation is strongly encouraged, as the programme helps you settle into your studies before lectures begin.
