Programme Overview
The City of Cape Town is rolling out various training programmes aimed at equipping participants with practical skills and workplace experience. Through this initiative, students and graduates gain exposure to different directorates within the City, enhancing their employability across multiple industries.
These programmes are designed to:
- Address high youth unemployment levels.
- Provide structured learning and skills development.
- Improve prospects for permanent employment in various sectors.
Available Opportunities
1. Work Integrated Learning (WIL) – Fixed Term Contract
Overview: This programme integrates academic learning with practical application in the workplace, often required to complete a formal qualification. It is formally recognized as In-Service Training.
Requirements:
- National Certificate – N6 (WIL/In-service Training)
- Letter from the institution requesting WIL
- Academic transcript
2. Graduate Internship Programme (GIP) – Fixed Term Contract
Overview: This internship is for graduates who have completed qualifications at a university or university of technology. It provides hands-on experience in their chosen field.
Requirements:
- 3-year Diploma / National Diploma / Advanced Diploma / B-Tech / Degree / Honours / Masters / PhD
3. Learnerships – 12 to 24 Months
Overview: Learnerships combine theoretical learning with workplace practice to achieve a qualification registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF).
Requirements:
- Grade 12 certificate
- Additional requirements may vary depending on the learnership
4. Skills Programme – Fixed Term Contract
Overview: Offers practical exposure to candidates through structured experiential learning opportunities.
Requirements:
- Grade 10/11 / National Senior Certificate (Grade 12/Matric) / N1-N5 / Level 2–4
Important Notes
- Students must not be enrolled in further studies during the internship programme, except for WIL, PhD, or Doctoral programmes.
- Completion of the programme does not guarantee employment with the City of Cape Town.
