Ampath, one of South Africa’s largest private pathology laboratory groups, has opened applications for its 2027 Student Medical Technician (GTS) Programme. The 24-month full-time training runs from January 2027 to December 2028 at six laboratory sites across Gauteng, the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. It is open to candidates with a Grade 12 pass of at least 50 percent in Mathematics, Life Sciences and English. Take note: this is a self-paid programme costing R65,000, and applications close on 31 July 2026.

About the Programme

Ampath operates one of the most extensive private pathology networks in South Africa, processing millions of diagnostic tests each year for doctors, hospitals and patients nationwide. Its laboratories cover the full spectrum of diagnostic medicine, from routine blood tests to specialised molecular diagnostics.

The Student Medical Technician Programme is a fully accredited 24-month training pathway that combines structured classroom learning with supervised laboratory rotations. Students train under experienced laboratory practitioners and become eligible for the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) board examination after 18 months of laboratory rotation. Medical technicians perform the diagnostic tests behind medical decisions, making this a stable, professional healthcare career that does not require a university degree to enter.

What the Programme Covers

  • 24 months of full-time training, Monday to Friday (about 40 hours per week)
  • Structured classroom instruction combined with hands-on laboratory rotations
  • Training in one of four pathology disciplines: Clinical Pathology, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology or Histopathology

  • Eligibility for the HPCSA board examination after 18 months, leading to professional registration

Training sites for the 2027 intake: Gqeberha (Greenacres) and East London for Clinical Pathology; Sandton (Cedar) for Histopathology; Centurion (NRL) for Chemical Pathology and Microbiology; and Durban (Westridge) for Clinical Pathology.

The closing date for the Ampath Student Medical Technician Programme 2027 is 31 July 2026. No late applications will be accepted.

Why It Matters, and What to Consider

Healthcare remains one of the few South African sectors with consistent demand for qualified professionals, and medical technicians are needed in every pathology laboratory in the country. This programme offers a direct route from Matric to HPCSA professional registration in two years, without university admission requirements. That accessibility matters in a country where thousands of capable Matriculants cannot secure university places.

However, be clear-eyed about the cost: this is a self-funded programme at R65,000, and completing it does not guarantee employment at Ampath, although Ampath advertises vacancies to graduates when positions open. Before committing, ask Ampath in writing for the full cost breakdown, payment schedule and refund terms. For candidates who can manage the fee, a scarce professional qualification with national demand is a strong long-term investment.
