Working under the supervision of the Superintendent (Aquatic Safety), the Child Minder will play an essential role in child protection and care, ensuring children are safely reunited with their families.
Key Responsibilities
As a Child Minder, you will be responsible for the safety, care, and wellbeing of children while they are separated from their families. Your duties will include a wide range of tasks aimed at ensuring the children in your care are safe, comfortable, and well looked after during their time at the beachfront or overnight facility.
- Safety and Child Protection
Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the safety of children who have been separated from their parents or guardians. You will be stationed at the designated beach or overnight facility, keeping watch over the children and helping to ensure they are kept safe until reunited with their families. - Shift Work and Facility Management
The position requires you to work either 8-hour shifts on the beaches or 12-hour shifts at the overnight facility, offering 24-hour coverage to ensure constant child protection. This flexibility allows for a diverse and varied work experience. You will be responsible for the setup and takedown of shelters or tents at the beginning and end of your shift, ensuring the facilities remain clean and well-maintained. - Detailed Child Custody Logs
Keeping a thorough register is a key responsibility. You will maintain an accurate log detailing the names and times children are received, the individuals who handed them over, and the times they are reunited with their families. This log is vital for accountability and to maintain the highest standards of safety and security. - Child Care and Emotional Support
During their time with you, children may experience anxiety or distress. You will be required to provide emotional support to comfort them, offering refreshments and blankets if necessary. You will ensure that all children in your care are well-fed and safe, ensuring they have a positive experience while separated from their families. - Meal Preparation and Overnight Care
For children staying overnight, you will be responsible for preparing and serving three meals a day, ensuring all children are properly cared for. You will also ensure that they have clean bedding and clothing. Maintaining the cleanliness and comfort of the overnight facility will also be part of your duties, ensuring the children’s environment remains safe and secure. - Escorting Children to Facilities
Children may require assistance to access ablution facilities. You will escort them as needed, ensuring their safety and comfort throughout the process. This task requires attentiveness and care to ensure no child is left unattended.
Essential Requirements
To qualify for this role, the following minimum requirements must be met:
- Primary Education: A suitable level of primary education is necessary for this role.
- Relevant Experience: At least 3 months of relevant experience in child care or a similar role is required. This may include experience in childcare settings, hospitality, or safety roles.
- Competencies: You will need strong skills in managing work, maintaining safety, and demonstrating ethical conduct. Communication skills, both oral and interpersonal, are essential for effective engagement with children, parents, and colleagues.
Preferred Requirements

- Secondary Education: An appropriate level of secondary education is preferred but not required.
