Are you an organised and proactive legal professional looking to make a significant impact in corporate litigation? The City of Pretoria is seeking a dedicated Legal Administrative Officer to join its Group Legal and Secretariat Services, specifically within the Legal Counsel Division.

The Legal Administrative Officer position, based in Pretoria Central, is a vital role within the Legal Counsel Section. This position requires a keen eye for detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to manage litigation matters effectively.

Reporting directly to senior legal staff, the officer will provide professional support in managing legal matters, from motion applications to the execution of court orders. The officer will also advise on proactive measures to limit avoidable litigation.

Key Responsibilities

The Legal Administrative Officer will be expected to undertake the following primary functions:

  • Evaluate Legal Processes: Assess court processes, motion applications, and summonses, advising whether the City should oppose, defend, or initiate actions.
  • Litigation Management: Oversee allocated litigated matters, advising on the appointment of attorneys, and representing the City in consultations and court proceedings.
  • Execution of Court Orders: Ensure the successful execution of court orders, including following up on payments of fees and costs.
  • Collection of Cost Orders: Work to collect cost orders, where applicable.
  • Collaboration with Departments: Keep departments informed about legal cases and provide advice on proactive measures to reduce avoidable litigation.
  • Document Management: Draft, review, and vet legal and contractual documents to ensure accuracy and compliance.

Required Qualifications and Experience

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications and experience requirements:

  • T11 Level:
    • Grade 12 qualification.
    • Currently studying towards a career-related tertiary qualification.
  • T12 Level:
    • A three-year career-related tertiary qualification (degree or national diploma) in Law or a related field.
    • A postgraduate qualification in Law will be advantageous.
    • At least two years of relevant experience in administrative, constitutional, local government, and civil procedure law environments.

Additionally, applicants must possess:

  • A valid Code B driving licence.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Project, and PowerPoint.
  • A clean criminal record, with the ability to undergo fingerprinting by the Tshwane Metro Police Department at their own cost.

Remuneration Package

The Legal Administrative Officer role offers a competitive salary package, commensurate with experience:

  • T11: R400,944 – R556,836 per annum
  • T12: R449,040 – R623,664 per annum
  • Estimated Remuneration: T11: R543,294 – R741,715 per annum, T12: R604,511 – R826,774 per annum.
