Welding Skills Programme Offers R3 000 Monthly Stipend

The ETDP SETA Mpumalanga Provincial Office, in partnership with Gert Sibande TVET College, is giving unemployed youth an opportunity to kick-start a career in the engineering and manufacturing sectors through the Unemployed Coded Welding Skills Programme.

This initiative is aimed at young South Africans who are energetic, technically inclined, and eager to develop a practical trade skill that is in high demand across multiple industries.

Programme Details

  • Duration: 6 months
  • Structure: The programme combines both practical and theoretical components
  • Monthly Stipend: R3 000
  • Closing Date: 07 November 2025

This stipend ensures that learners can focus on developing their skills without financial strain during the training period.

About the Coded Welding Skills Programme

The Coded Welding Programme equips trainees with essential technical knowledge and practical experience to become certified Coded Welders, specialists trained to produce welds that meet stringent industry standards.

Participants will learn to interpret and follow Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and master a range of techniques to create high-quality, compliant welds.

Key training areas include:

  • Visual, non-destructive, and destructive evaluation techniques
  • Engineering and process-specific health and safety practices
  • Performing positional welds using different materials and welding methods

By the end of the six-month course, trainees will be able to produce strong, precision welds that meet local and international standards; a skill that’s highly sought after in the construction, automotive, energy, and manufacturing sectors.

Minimum Requirements

To be considered for the programme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Educational Requirements:

  • NCV Level 3 / N3 in Mechanical Engineering or Welding, or
  • Grade 11 with passes in Mathematics and Physical Science

Advantageous Qualifications:

  • NCV Level 4 or N4 in Mechanical Engineering, Welding, or Engineering and Related Design, or
  • Grade 12 with Mathematics and Physical Science

Additional Requirements:

  • Prior welding experience or a basic welding course is an advantage
  • Must be physically fit with good hand-eye coordination
  • A technical assessment will be conducted
  • Applicants must not be enrolled in any other programme during the training

Interested applicants must submit certified copies of the following documents (not older than six months):

  • South African ID
  • Grade 11/12 certificate with Mathematics and Physical Science, or an NCV/N certificate in Mechanical Engineering/Welding
  • Updated CV and any relevant qualifications
