Warehouse & Picker Salary in South Africa 2026

Warehouse and distribution jobs are among the most available entry-level positions in South Africa, particularly in logistics hubs like Gauteng, Cape Town, and Durban. Here is what warehouse workers and pickers actually earn in 2026.

Salary Ranges (2026)

Entry-Level Picker / Packer (0–1 Year)

R5,500–R8,500 per month. Entry-level pickers and packers in retail distribution centres (Shoprite, Pick n Pay, Woolworths logistics) typically earn R5,500–R7,500/month. Overnight and weekend shifts attract additional allowances.

Forklift / Reach Truck Operator

R9,000–R16,000 per month. Certified forklift operators earn significantly more than general warehouse staff. A valid forklift licence adds R2,000–R4,000/month. Operators at e-commerce warehouses (Takealot, Superbalist) typically earn R10,000–R14,000/month.

Senior Warehouse / Inventory Controller

R14,000–R22,000 per month. Supervisors, receiving clerks, and inventory controllers with WMS (Warehouse Management System) experience earn R14,000–R20,000/month. Shift supervisors at large DCs earn R18,000–R25,000/month.

Certifications That Boost Salary

Forklift licence is the single most valuable certification — adding R2,000–R5,000/month. Dangerous goods handling for chemical warehouses adds R1,500–R3,000/month. WMS proficiency (SAP WM, Manhattan Associates) is increasingly required for inventory roles.

Career Progression

General Worker / Picker → Forklift Operator → Senior Picker / Receiving Clerk → Inventory Controller → Warehouse Supervisor → Warehouse Manager. Warehouse managers at large DCs earn R30,000–R55,000/month.
