This is an excellent opportunity for qualifying South African youth living in Gauteng to study towards a Diploma in Nursing while receiving practical clinical training at public healthcare facilities across the province.

The programme prepares future nurses with the knowledge, practical experience, and professional skills needed to deliver quality healthcare in South Africa.

Gauteng College of Nursing Campuses

Successful applicants will study at one of the Gauteng College of Nursing campuses:

  • Ann Latsky Campus
  • Chris Hani Baragwanath Campus
  • SG Lourens Campus
  • Bonalesedi Campus

Your placement will depend on the College’s selection process and available space.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for the 2027 intake, applicants must:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Reside in Gauteng Province
  • Meet the academic admission requirements
  • Apply online before the closing date
  • Be willing to participate in both classroom learning and practical clinical training

Applicants may apply if they have:

  • A Senior Certificate
  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC)
  • A National Vocational Certificate (Primary Health)
  • Are currently in Grade 12 (using Grade 11 final results)

Academic Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following qualification requirements.

Senior Certificate

You must have:

  • English HG: D or SG: C
  • Biology HG: D or SG: C
  • Mathematics HG: D or SG: C
  • M Score of 17

National Senior Certificate (NSC)

You must have:

  • English Level 4
  • Life Sciences Level 4
  • Mathematics Level 4 or
  • Mathematical Literacy Level 5
  • APS Score of 27 or higher

Note: Life Orientation counts only half towards the APS calculation.


National Certificate (Vocational)

Applicants must obtain:

50% in Fundamental Subjects

Including:

  • English First Additional Language
  • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
  • Life Orientation

60% in Vocational Subjects

Including:

  • South African Health Care System
  • Public Health
  • The Human Body and Mind
  • Community Oriented Primary Care

Current Grade 12 Learners

Current Grade 12 learners are welcome to apply.

Your Grade 11 final results must meet the National Senior Certificate admission requirements.

Shortlisted applicants will be required to complete additional selection stages, including:

  • Psychometric assessment
  • Verification of qualifications
  • Medical surveillance
  • Physical examination
  • Document verification

Only applicants who successfully complete all stages may be offered a place in the programme

  • Senior Certificate, National Senior Certificate or National Vocational Certificate

  • Final Grade 11 results (for current Grade 12 learners)

If shortlisted, applicants must present the original supporting documents at the selection centre.

Important Conditions of the Programme

Successful applicants will be required to:

  • Sign an agreement with the Gauteng Department of Health
  • Attend lectures throughout the programme
  • Participate in Work Integrated Learning (WIL)
  • Complete practical clinical training in Gauteng public hospitals and clinics
  • Work shifts, weekends, public holidays and night duty as part of the training programme

Clinical training forms an important part of becoming a qualified nurse.
