Ekurhuleni West TVET College (EWC), in collaboration with CXI-Africa and CHIETA, is recruiting eligible EWC students for a six-month Data Lab Project at the Tembisa Campus. The programme is aimed at students with an IT background who want to gain practical experience in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (AI) while working with real-world data and developing prototype solutions.

With limited spaces available, eligible students are encouraged to submit their applications before the 11 September 2026 closing date.

EWC CHIETA Data Lab Project

The CHIETA Data Lab Project provides an opportunity for students to move beyond classroom-based learning and gain exposure to how data, technology and artificial intelligence are applied in practical environments.

Participants will become active contributors in a real-world Data Lab, where they can develop their technical capabilities through hands-on projects involving real datasets.

The programme is particularly relevant for EWC students interested in building careers in areas such as:

  • Data Science
  • Artificial Intelligence
  • Data Analytics
  • Information Technology
  • Technology and digital innovation
  • Data-driven problem solving

The project can also help participants strengthen their industry readiness by giving them practical experience that can complement their academic qualifications.

What Will Participants Gain?

Successful participants will have the opportunity to:

Gain practical Data Science and AI experience

The programme focuses on practical exposure to Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, allowing participants to develop their understanding of how these technologies can be used to solve real-world problems.

Work with real datasets

Rather than focusing only on theoretical concepts, participants will work with real datasets. This can help students understand the data lifecycle and how information can be analysed and used to support decision-making.

Develop prototype solutions

Participants will have an opportunity to develop prototype solutions using real datasets. This provides valuable exposure to the type of problem-solving and project work that may be encountered in technology-related workplaces.

Build industry-ready skills

The programme is designed to strengthen participants’ skills and prepare them for future opportunities in the technology and digital economy.

For students looking to enter the growing fields of data and AI, practical project experience can be an important addition to their CV.

Why This Opportunity Could Be Valuable

Data and artificial intelligence are increasingly being used across industries, creating demand for people with relevant digital and analytical skills.

For TVET students, opportunities that combine their existing IT knowledge with practical exposure can help bridge the gap between studying technology and applying technology in a real-world environment.

The CHIETA Data Lab Project could also give participants practical examples of projects and solutions they can discuss when applying for future internships, graduate programmes, entry-level technology positions or further training.

However, participation in the programme should not be viewed as a guarantee of employment. Students should use the experience to continue building their portfolios, technical skills and professional networks.

How to Apply

Eligible EWC students who are interested in the CHIETA Data Lab Project should submit their applications using the contact details provided in the recruitment notice.
