Using AI to improve your own writing

This is the single most useful thing AI does for a job seeker, and it is also where people damage their chances by going too far. The line between help and harm is clear once you see it.

✓ Helps you Tidy up your own CV bullet points Check your tone Explain what a job advert is asking for ✗ Works against you Writing a whole CV from nothing Inventing experience Anything you cannot talk about laterIt can improve what is true. It cannot invent what is true.
Where AI helps you, and where it starts working against you.

Good use: you write your CV bullet points, then ask AI to make them clearer. You write a message to an employer, then ask whether the tone is right. You paste a job advert and ask what skills it is really asking for.

Bad use: asking AI to write your whole CV from nothing. It will invent experience you do not have, and even when it does not, you end up with a document you cannot talk about.

An employer asks about something on your AI-written CV.

What happens: You can answer in detail, because it happened to you. The polish helped you get the interview and the substance is yours.

What happens: You cannot expand on it, because you do not remember it and some of it did not happen. Interviewers ask follow-up questions precisely to find this.

The rule is simple: AI can improve what is true. It cannot invent what is true. Anything it writes that you cannot defend in an interview is a liability, not an advantage.

Can employers tell if AI wrote it?

Sometimes, and detection tools are unreliable in both directions. But the real risk is not detection. It is the interview, where you have to talk about what is on the page. That is where an invented CV falls apart, and it falls apart in front of the person deciding.

English is not my first language. Is it cheating to use AI?

No. Using a tool to express your own experience clearly is no different from asking a friend to check your spelling. What matters is that the experience is real and you can discuss it. Your ideas are yours. The grammar help is just help.

Before you move on

  • Write it yourself first, then improve it
  • Never let it invent experience
  • Check you can talk about every line
