Most people lose more time fighting formatting than writing. Almost all of that fight comes from three misunderstandings, and once you see them the software stops feeling hostile.
Paste without formatting. When you copy from a website, you bring its fonts and colours with it. Ctrl, Shift and V pastes the text only, and it fixes the most common cause of a document that looks like a ransom note.
Use bullet and numbered list buttons rather than typing dashes by hand. The software then keeps them aligned when text wraps.
Undo is unlimited. Ctrl and Z, repeatedly. There is no formatting mistake you cannot walk back, so experiment freely.
You paste text from a website into your document.
What happens: It arrives with the website's font, size, colour and link styling, and now your document has two designs fighting each other.
What happens: Just the words, in your document's style. This one shortcut prevents more formatting mess than anything else.
My bullet points keep going wrong
You are probably typing a dash and a space rather than using the list button. Select the lines and click the bullet list button so the software owns the formatting. Then Tab indents a level and Shift Tab moves it back out.
Everything suddenly changed font and I do not know why
Press Ctrl and Z immediately, several times if needed. Something was selected that you did not notice being selected. Undo before trying to fix it manually, because manual fixing usually makes it worse.
Before you move on
- Learn Ctrl Shift V to paste text only
- Use the list buttons, not typed dashes
- Undo repeatedly instead of fixing by hand
