Job Overview
The Compliance Officer will play a vital role in supporting the Investment Banking Division at Absa, providing proactive and responsive compliance advice across various business units. Key Responsibilities
Advisory and Compliance Support
As part of the Private Side Compliance team, the Compliance Officer will:
- Provide proactive and responsive advisory support on compliance-related matters across Absa’s Investment Banking Division, including M&A, Equity and Debt Capital Markets, Sustainable Finance, and more.
- Offer guidance on conduct risk-related policies and standards, ensuring alignment with industry regulations.
- Attend Business/transaction approval Committees to provide compliance approval for transactions, ensuring all deals comply with regulatory requirements.
- Identify and manage regulatory risks, staying ahead of potential challenges that could impact the business.
- Assist in drafting and implementing compliance policies that reflect current regulatory expectations, while maintaining an effective compliance culture.
Training and Stakeholder Engagement
The role involves ensuring that the team is well-versed in compliance requirements:
- Develop and conduct training programs aimed at raising awareness of compliance risks, particularly for new joiners and employees at various levels.
- Maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including business units, regulatory bodies, and industry peers, to ensure compliance objectives are met effectively.
Risk Management and Monitoring
The Compliance Officer will actively contribute to the development and monitoring of the bank’s compliance risk management program:
- Conduct ad hoc compliance monitoring to assess control effectiveness within business areas.
- Review new business initiatives, products, and transactions to ensure all compliance requirements are met.
- Support the Head of Compliance in preparing reports for the Board and other key committees, ensuring all stakeholders are well-informed about compliance risks and actions.
Innovation and Compliance Projects
This role also includes:
- Driving innovation within the compliance function, ensuring that the bank’s practices remain up-to-date and effective.
- Contributing to internal projects aimed at enhancing the compliance culture and risk management processes.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Educational Background
Candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree or Advanced Diploma in Business, Commerce, Law, or Management Studies. Additional qualifications in Compliance or related fields will be advantageous.
Professional Experience
The ideal candidate will have:
- Compliance advisory experience, particularly within the banking or financial services sector.
- Experience within investment banking, with a sound understanding of banking products, regulations, and operational controls.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior management and regulatory bodies.
Knowledge & Skills
A solid understanding of the following is essential:
- Banking regulations and compliance standards.
- Investment banking operations and controls across various business units.
- Risk management processes and the ability to offer solutions that balance regulatory compliance with business objectives.
