DPSA Vacancy Circulars: The Latest Public Service Jobs and What They Mean

Every week the Department of Public Service and Administration publishes a list of job vacancies across national government and the provinces. It is called the Public Service Vacancy Circular, and it is where government advertises almost every post it needs to fill, from general worker and admin clerk right up to director.

This page keeps track of them. Each new circular is added on a Friday, with a plain summary of who is hiring, when applications close, and links to the official DPSA documents. The circular is published as one long PDF and also split into a separate PDF for each department and province, so you can open only the part you need.

How to apply: the Z83 form

Every public service application uses form Z83. The circular is clear that you must use the new Z83, which has applied since 1 January 2021. An application on the old form, or an incomplete one, is one of the most common reasons people are not considered.

How to fill it in

Fill in every section. Write the reference number of the post you are applying for, exactly as it appears in the advert, because departments sort applications by reference. If you are applying for more than one post, send a separate application for each one. Sign and date the form.

Documents to include

Send the completed Z83 and a detailed CV. Most departments ask for certified copies only later, from people who are shortlisted, so read the note at the top of that department section before you certify anything. If your qualification is from outside South Africa you will be asked for a SAQA evaluation report. Senior management posts also require the Nyukela pre-entry certificate from the National School of Government.

Where and when to send it

Send your application to the department that advertised the post, using the address or email in that advert. Do not send it to DPSA: DPSA publishes the circular but does not do the hiring, and the circular says plainly that enquiries must go to the advertising department. Your application must reach the department on or before that department closing date, so allow time and do not leave it to the last day.

Questions people ask

What is a DPSA vacancy circular?

It is the weekly list of job vacancies in national and provincial government, published by the Department of Public Service and Administration. Government departments send their adverts to DPSA, and DPSA puts them into one document. It is the official place where most public service posts are advertised.

Where do I find the latest circular?

On the DPSA website, under Newsroom and then Public service vacancy circular. We link to the official PDF for every circular on this page, and to a separate PDF for each department, so you can open only the part you need.

How often is a new circular published?

A new circular comes out every week, except during December. That is why this page is updated every Friday. The date on the front of each circular is the date it was issued, and closing dates are usually about two weeks after that.

Do I need the new Z83 form?

Yes. The new Z83 has applied since 1 January 2021 and departments will reject an application on the old form. Fill in every section, because an incomplete Z83 is one of the most common reasons applications are thrown out.

Do I need certified copies when I apply?

Usually not at the first step. Most departments now ask only for the Z83 and a CV, and request certified copies later, from people who are shortlisted. Each advert says what that department wants, so read the note at the top of the department section.

What happens if I miss the closing date?

Your application will not be considered. The circular says applications must reach the department on or before the closing date, so posting it on the closing date is usually too late. Each department sets its own date.

Can I use one application for several posts?

No. If you are applying for more than one post you must send a separate application for each, each with its own reference number. Several departments say plainly that duplicate or combined applications are not considered.

Why can DPSA not answer questions about a post?

DPSA publishes the circular but does not run the recruitment. Each advert names a contact person at the department that is hiring. The circular says plainly that enquiries must go to that department and that DPSA must not be approached for information about a post.
