The role
We’re looking for a Head Developer to lead the technical side of our web and software projects. You’ll own the build from architecture to launch: making the technical decisions, writing much of the code, and making sure what we hand over is secure, documented and easy for the client to run.
What you’ll do
• Design the technical setup for each project: stack, hosting, data model and integrations
• Build and maintain websites, web apps and content management systems
• Develop custom features and tools, including database-driven and API-based ones
• Set up hosting, security, backups and deployment pipelines
• Make sure work meets accessibility, performance and data protection (POPIA) standards
• Run testing, fix defects and support clients after launch
• Write technical documentation and train client staff to use and manage what we build
• Work with designers and project managers to keep delivery on time
Requirements
• A Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or Web Development at NQF level 7 or higher. Diplomas and advanced diplomas do not qualify.
• 2 to 5 years of hands-on web and software development experience
• Strong skills in at least one modern web stack (for example JavaScript/TypeScript, PHP or Python), plus SQL databases
• Experience with a CMS such as WordPress or a headless CMS
• Experience deploying and maintaining live sites: hosting, SSL, backups and security
• Clear written communication, including documentation
Advantageous
• Experience with maps or location data, booking and search features, or admin dashboards
• Experience with government or large-organisation clients
• Accessibility (WCAG) knowledge
